Diabetic Eye Exams in Pensacola, FL
Diabetes makes regular attention to your eye health especially important, even when your vision seems clear. At StarVision Optometry, Dr. Star Rostankovski, O.D., provides diabetic retinal eye examinations and comprehensive eye care inside Visionworks at Cordova Mall. Your evaluation and recommendations are based on your health history, symptoms, and examination findings.
Why schedule an eye exam when you have diabetes?
Diabetic retinopathy affects blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Early changes may cause no noticeable symptoms. Clear vision alone does not show whether the retina is healthy. An eye examination can help identify changes that need attention before you notice a problem.
The National Eye Institute recommends a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year for people with diabetes. Ask your eye doctor about the schedule appropriate for your individual circumstances, including any existing eye findings.
What to expect at StarVision
Tell the office that you have diabetes when requesting your appointment. Dr. Star reviews your vision concerns, medical and eye history, medications, and previous findings before determining which examinations and diagnostic tests are appropriate.
- Vision and eye health: Evaluation may include visual acuity, prescription needs, eye pressure, and examination of the external and internal structures of your eyes.
- Retinal evaluation: Dilation may be recommended to allow a more complete view of the back of the eye.
- Imaging when appropriate: StarVision offers retinal photography and optical coherence tomography, or OCT. These provide different views of retinal structures and can support evaluation when clinically indicated. Imaging complements a comprehensive examination.
- Clear next steps: Dr. Star explains meaningful findings and recommends follow-up based on your examination and health history.

Prepare for your visit
Bring your current glasses or contact lenses, medication list, insurance cards, and relevant information from previous eye examinations. Tell Dr. Star about new symptoms or changes in your health.
Dilation can temporarily blur vision and increase light sensitivity for several hours. Bring sunglasses and arrange for someone to drive you home if your eyes will be dilated. Call ahead if you have questions about preparing for your appointment.
Questions about diabetic eye examinations
Is an eyeglass prescription check enough?
A prescription check focuses on the correction needed to see clearly. A comprehensive eye examination also evaluates eye health. Tell the office about your diabetes so your appointment can address your health needs as well as your vision.
Should I wait until my vision changes?
No. Diabetic retinopathy can begin without symptoms. Keep the examination schedule recommended by your eye doctor. For sudden vision loss, a severe eye injury, or other severe symptoms, seek immediate emergency medical care. See our urgent eye care guidance.
Will insurance cover my visit?
Benefits depend on your specific plan and the services provided. Medical and routine vision benefits can differ. Contact the office with your insurance information before your visit to verify coverage and ask about possible costs.
